National Airborne Day

National Airborne Day falls on Monday, August 16, 2027. That is 293 days away.

Paratroopers are soldiers trained to reach the ground by parachute, jumping from aircraft to arrive where roads and runways cannot take them. National Airborne Day recognizes them and the airborne units of the United States military.

Airborne training is demanding. Students learn how to exit an aircraft, how to control a descent, and how to land by rolling to spread the impact, a move called a parachute landing fall. Many training jumps use a static line, a cord fixed inside the aircraft that pulls the parachute open as the jumper leaves. Soldiers who complete basic airborne training earn the parachutist badge, often called jump wings.

The Army's best known airborne formation is the 82nd Airborne Division. The 101st Airborne Division carries the airborne name and history as well, though it now trains for air assault by helicopter. Their shoulder patches are familiar to many families with someone who served.

The day is usually marked quietly. Veterans trade stories, families bring out old photos and patches, and some communities hold small gatherings or ceremonies. Museums with military collections often display parachutes, uniforms and gear that show how much a single jumper carries.

For anyone without a personal connection, the simplest way in is to listen. Ask an airborne veteran about a first jump, and many will describe the open door and the rush of wind before anything else.
