Amelia Earhart Day

Amelia Earhart Day falls on Saturday, July 24, 2027. That is 270 days away.

Amelia Earhart was an American pilot who became one of the best known flyers of the early age of aviation. She set out to show what a pilot could do, and she did it in small, loud, open-to-the-weather airplanes that asked a lot of the person at the controls.

She was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. She also wrote books, gave lectures and encouraged other women to take up flying. Her plainspoken confidence made her a public figure as much as a pilot.

Her story is also remembered for its ending. During an attempt to fly around the world, she and her navigator, Fred Noonan, disappeared over the central Pacific Ocean. They were never found, and people still study the maps and radio logs and argue over what happened.

Most people mark the day quietly. They read a biography, look at photographs of her standing beside her Lockheed Electra in a leather jacket, or visit a local airfield or aviation museum. Teachers often use her life as a way into early flight, navigation and the long, careful planning a single crossing required.

The Electra had two engines and room for a navigator, yet much of her final route crossed open water with only small islands as targets. Finding one of those islands from the air, with the tools of her time, was the hardest part of the trip.
