A little reason to celebrate

National App Day

Fun ยท December 11

A day about the small programs on phones, tablets and computers that wake us, guide us, count our steps and keep the group chat going.

National App Day

National App Day falls on Friday, December 11, 2026. That is 45 days away.

An app is a piece of software built to do one job, or a handful of related jobs, on a phone, tablet or computer. The word is short for application. Some apps are tiny, like a flashlight or a timer. Others are whole worlds, with maps, music libraries or games that take months to finish.

Most people carry dozens of them without thinking about it. A weather app gets checked before the coat goes on. A map app quietly reroutes around traffic. A banking app, a recipe app and a language app might all share the same screen, sorted into folders or scattered across pages nobody has opened in a year.

That last part is where the day gets interesting. It invites a look at what is actually on the device. Which apps get opened every morning, and which were downloaded once for a trip and forgotten? Scrolling through the full list can feel a little like cleaning out a junk drawer, full of half-remembered reasons.

Some people use the occasion to tidy up, delete what they no longer use and update the rest. Others go the other way and finally try that free app a friend keeps recommending. Teachers, parents and grandparents sometimes trade tips, since one person's everyday tool can be news to someone else.

It also helps to check app permissions now and then. Most phones let you see which apps can use your location, camera or microphone, and switch off access an app does not need.
