A day to notice and thank arborists, the trained tree care workers who prune, inspect, plant and safely remove trees in yards, parks and along streets.

Arborist Appreciation Day falls on Wednesday, June 16, 2027. That is 232 days away.
Arborists are the people who look after trees for a living. They prune branches, check trees for disease or weak spots, plant young trees in the right places and take down trees that have become unsafe. Some work for cities and utilities, some for private companies, and some run small crews that serve a single town.
The work is part science and part climbing. An arborist has to know how a tree grows, where a cut will heal well and which limbs are carrying more weight than they should. Then they often have to go up and do it, using ropes, harnesses and sometimes a bucket truck, with a chainsaw hanging from their belt. Down on the ground, another crew member watches the lines and clears the brush.
Most people only notice this work after a storm, when a crew shows up to clear a fallen oak from a road. The rest of the year it is quieter. A street tree gets thinned so it does not catch the wind, or a dead branch over a playground comes down before it falls on its own.
Appreciation can be simple. Thank the crew working on your block, keep a respectful distance from the work zone, and maybe learn the name of the tree they are tending. If you have a tree you are unsure about, a certified arborist can tell you what it needs, which is usually less drastic than people fear.
The neatest pruning cuts are the ones you never spot, because the tree just looks like itself.
