A little reason to celebrate

Barbershop Music Appreciation Day

Hobby ยท July 13

A day for barbershop harmony: four voices, no instruments, close chords sung a cappella by quartets and choruses.

Barbershop Music Appreciation Day

Barbershop Music Appreciation Day falls on Tuesday, July 13, 2027. That is 259 days away.

Barbershop music is unaccompanied vocal harmony, usually sung by four voices. The melody sits in the lead, the tenor floats above it, and the baritone and bass fill in the chords underneath. There are no instruments, so every note comes from someone standing a few feet away.

The sound is built on close harmony. Singers tune their chords so tightly that the notes seem to lock together, and listeners sometimes hear a faint extra tone ringing over the top. Fans call this a ringing chord, and chasing it is a big part of why people keep singing.

Most barbershop singing happens in quartets and in larger choruses, often in matching outfits with a little choreography. The songs tend to be older popular tunes and sentimental ballads, arranged so each part has something interesting to do. A good tag, the short flourish at the end of a song, can get sung over and over just for the pleasure of it.

You do not need a trained voice to join in. Many community choruses welcome beginners and teach parts by ear or with learning tracks, so the main requirement is being willing to hum a note and hold it. Listening counts too, and a live quartet in a small room is a different experience from a recording.

If you try singing a tag with three friends, expect the first attempts to wobble. Then one chord lands, and everyone tends to stop and grin.
