A little reason to celebrate

Barbershop Quartet Day

Hobby · History · April 11

A look at the barbershop quartet itself: four singers, four parts, matching outfits and the small group that makes it all work.

Barbershop Quartet Day

Barbershop Quartet Day falls on Sunday, April 11, 2027. That is 166 days away.

A barbershop quartet is four people and nothing else. No piano, no backing track, no conductor waving from the front. Each singer holds one part, and the group has to stay together by listening closely to one another.

The four parts have names. The lead usually carries the melody. The tenor sings above it, often lightly. The baritone fills in the middle, and the bass sits underneath. Because there is only one voice per part, every singer is exposed. If one person drifts, everyone hears it.

Quartets tend to form the way bands do. A few friends from a chorus start staying after rehearsal, someone finds a fourth voice, and the group picks a name. Many quartets go on to sing at community events and in organized contests, where judges listen for things like tuning, blend and presentation.

Then there is the look. The classic image is striped vests, bow ties, sleeve garters and straw boater hats, a nod to an older era of American entertainment. Plenty of modern quartets skip the boaters and wear matching suits or coordinated colors instead. Either way, dressing alike tells the audience these four people are one act.

A good quartet also plays to the room. Small gestures, a shared glance before the last chord, a bit of comic timing between songs. With so few people on stage, personality carries a long way, and the bass usually gets the best deadpan moments.
