A day for the beach itself: sand, tides, shells and the long afternoons people spend at the edge of the water.

National Beach Day falls on Monday, August 30, 2027. That is 307 days away.
A beach is the strip of loose material where land meets water, usually sand but sometimes pebbles, shells or crushed coral. This day is simply a reason to go stand on one, or to think about the one you would visit if you could.
Every beach has its own character. Some are wide and flat, with waves that run a long way up the sand and slide back with a hiss. Others are narrow and steep, ringed with rocks and tide pools. Lake beaches tend to be calmer, with fresher water and fewer gulls arguing over chips.
Most beach days follow a familiar rhythm. People claim a spot, spread out a towel, and then spend the next few hours moving it farther from the incoming tide. There is wading, reading, napping, digging, and long walks along the waterline where the sand is firm enough to make walking easy.
The tide changes the scene twice a day on ocean shores. At low tide, more of the beach appears, along with shells, seaweed and the small creatures that live in tide pools. At high tide the water reaches farther up, and the dry sand shrinks. Checking a tide table before a visit helps with planning a walk or a search for shells.
The wrack line, that uneven ribbon of seaweed and driftwood left by the last high tide, is often where the most interesting finds turn up.
