A little reason to celebrate

National Best Friends Day

Family · Fun · June 8

A day for the friend who knows your coffee order, your bad jokes and your worst haircut, and stays anyway. Ideas for marking it together.

National Best Friends Day

National Best Friends Day falls on Tuesday, June 8, 2027. That is 224 days away.

A best friend is the person you call first. Not always with big news. Sometimes it is a photo of a strange dog, or a question about whether a shirt is too orange. This day is set aside for that person, and for saying out loud what usually goes unsaid.

Best friendships come in many shapes. Some go back to a shared bus seat in grade school. Some start late, at a new job or in a waiting room, and feel old within a year. Some best friends are siblings, spouses or neighbors. Distance changes the form a friendship takes, but plenty survive on voice messages and an inside joke that has been running for longer than either person can explain.

Marking the day tends to be simple. People send a message, dig up an old picture, or plan a meal together. A walk works. So does a phone call with no particular agenda, the kind that wanders from weekend plans to a childhood memory and back.

The gesture does not need to be grand. A note that names one specific thing (the time they drove across town with soup, the way they always remember your sister's name) usually lands better than a general compliment. Friends tend to keep those notes, folded into books and drawers, for years.
