A little reason to celebrate

Big Wind Day

Nature · History · April 12

A day for paying attention to wind: how it moves, how people measure it, and why exposed places like mountaintops feel its full force.

Big Wind Day

Big Wind Day falls on Monday, April 12, 2027. That is 167 days away.

Wind is air on the move, pushed along when one patch of the atmosphere is warmer or under different pressure than the next. Big Wind Day is about wind at its strongest, and the long human habit of trying to measure it.

Most of the time wind is easy to ignore. It rattles a screen door, lifts a few leaves, dries the laundry. Then it picks up, and suddenly it is the only thing anyone talks about. Exposed places get the worst of it. Mountain summits, open plains and coastlines have little to slow the air down, so gusts arrive with real weight behind them.

People have been reading the wind for a very long time. Sailors judged it by the look of the sea. Weather vanes show its direction from rooftops and barns. An anemometer, often a set of little cups spinning on a post, turns that motion into a number. The Beaufort scale gives names to wind strength based on what you can see, from smoke drifting lazily to whole trees bending.

You can do some of that observing yourself. Watch which way flags point, how fast clouds cross the sky, or how a tall tree moves compared with a short one. A homemade wind vane needs little more than a straw, a pencil and some cardboard, and it will be more honest about the weather than most forecasts.

On a breezy evening, standing still and listening is enough. Wind sounds different in pine needles than in oak leaves, and different again around the corner of a house.
