A little reason to celebrate

Bluebird of Happiness Day

Animal · Fun · September 24

The bluebird as a symbol of cheer, plus a look at the real North American birds behind it and gentle ways to watch them.

Bluebird of Happiness Day

Bluebird of Happiness Day falls on Friday, September 24, 2027. That is 332 days away.

A small blue bird has stood for happiness in stories and songs for a long time, and this day gives that idea a little room. It is a nod to the symbol and to the actual birds that inspired it.

In North America there are three bluebirds: the Eastern, the Western and the Mountain. All three are thrushes, related to the American robin, and they share its round, upright posture on a fence post. The male Eastern bluebird wears a deep blue back and a rusty orange breast. The male Mountain bluebird is almost entirely sky blue, as if someone ran out of other colors.

Bluebirds nest in cavities, such as old woodpecker holes or hollow fence posts, and they readily use nest boxes. They eat mostly insects in warm months and turn to berries and small fruits when insects are scarce. Open country suits them: fields, meadows, orchards and the edges of woods, anywhere with a perch and a clear view of the ground.

Watching one hunt is quietly absorbing. A bluebird sits still, scans the grass, then drops down to catch something and flutters back up. Binoculars and patience do most of the work, and keeping a respectful distance lets the bird carry on as usual.

The symbol also lives on in jewelry, glass figurines and greeting cards, often given as a small wish for good luck. Plenty of people keep one on a windowsill, catching the light.
