Body language is everything a person says without speaking. Posture, gestures, facial expressions, eye contact and the distance people keep from one another all carry meaning, and most of it happens without anyone planning it.
People read these signals constantly. A smile, a shrug, crossed arms or a lean forward can change how a sentence lands. Often the body and the words agree. Sometimes they do not, and listeners tend to notice the mismatch even when they cannot say exactly what felt off.
The tricky part is that gestures are not a universal dictionary. A thumbs up, a nod or steady eye contact can mean different things in different cultures, and even within one family a folded pair of arms might mean annoyance or simply a chilly room. Reading body language well is less about decoding single signs and more about watching for patterns and context.
The easiest way to explore it is to watch. Sit somewhere busy and notice how friends greet each other compared with strangers. Turn the sound off on a movie scene and see how much of the story still comes through. Actors and mimes build whole performances from this, and a silent film can be a fine study session.
It is also interesting to turn the attention inward. Many people discover they have a habit of touching their face, tapping a foot or nodding along while they think. Nobody needs to fix these habits, but spotting one is a little like hearing your own voice on a recording for the first time.
