History ยท February 8
A day for Scouting in America: the troops, merit badges, campouts and service projects that young people take on together.

National Boy Scouts Day falls on Monday, February 8, 2027. That is 104 days away.
Scouting is an outdoor program built around small groups, called troops and patrols, where young people learn skills by doing them. Knot tying, first aid, camping, cooking over a fire and finding your way with a map and compass all show up early, and they tend to stick.
Much of the structure comes from merit badges. Each badge covers one subject, from astronomy to woodworking, and a Scout earns it by completing a set of requirements with an adult counselor. A sash full of embroidered circles is really a record of afternoons spent learning something specific.
The program also leans on service. Scouts often take on community projects, and the rank of Eagle Scout requires planning and leading one. Older members teach younger ones, which means a fourteen year old might be the person explaining how to pitch a tent in the rain.
People mark the day in different ways. Current Scouts may wear their uniforms to school or volunteer somewhere local. Former Scouts dig out old handbooks and find they still remember the Scout motto, which is short enough to recall decades later: be prepared.
The handbook itself remains a good read for anyone, with plain instructions for reading weather, building a shelter and identifying trees by their leaves.
