National Brownie Day falls on Tuesday, December 8, 2026. That is 42 days away.
A brownie is a small square of baked chocolate, usually made from butter, sugar, eggs, flour and cocoa or melted chocolate. It is baked in a flat pan and cut into pieces once it cools, or before it cools if nobody can wait.
People tend to sort themselves into two camps. Fudgy brownies are dense and moist, with more fat and less flour. Cakey ones are lighter and rise a little more, often with extra egg or a pinch of baking powder. A good batch usually has a thin, shiny crust on top that crackles when you cut it.
Then there is the question of the pan. Corner pieces get two crisp edges, middle pieces stay soft all the way through, and households have quietly negotiated over this for a long time. Some bakers buy special pans that give every piece an edge, which settles the matter for good.
Add-ins change the character of a brownie more than you might expect. Walnuts and pecans are the classic choice. Chocolate chips make it richer, a swirl of peanut butter or cream cheese makes it marbled, and a little flaky salt on top sharpens the chocolate. Blondies leave out the cocoa and lean on brown sugar instead.
The easiest way to mark the day is to bake a pan and share it. Brownies travel well, keep for a few days wrapped up, and cut neatly if you let them cool fully and wipe the knife between slices.
