A day for camping in all its forms, from a tent in a state park to a sleeping bag in the backyard, and the simple pleasures of a night outdoors.

National Camp Day falls on Thursday, November 19, 2026. That is 23 days away.
Camping means trading a roof for a tent, a cabin or just open sky, and letting the outdoors set the schedule for a while. It can be a week deep in the backcountry or one night on the lawn with the porch light switched off.
The appeal is mostly in the small routines. Pitching the tent, finding the flattest patch of ground, gathering kindling, waiting for water to boil on a little stove. Food tastes different outside, partly because everything takes longer to make. A campfire gives light, warmth and something to stare at, which may be its most important job.
Night is when camping feels most like itself. Away from streetlights, more stars show up, and sounds you never notice at home (wind in leaves, crickets, a distant owl) become the whole soundtrack. Many campers say they sleep better outside, though the rock under the sleeping pad usually has an opinion.
People mark the day by heading to a campground, planning a future trip, or setting up a tent in the yard so kids can try it close to the kitchen. Others simply cook dinner over a grill and eat it outside.
A good first trip does not need much gear. A tent, something warm to sleep in, a light, water and a plan for meals cover most of it, and borrowing beats buying for a first try.
