A little reason to celebrate

National Candy Day

Food ยท November 4

A day for candy in all its forms, from hard sweets and caramels to chocolate bars, gummies and the penny candy of corner stores.

National Candy Day

National Candy Day falls on Wednesday, November 4, 2026. That is 8 days away.

Candy is sugar that has been cooked, cooled and coaxed into a shape. Heat a sugar syrup to different temperatures and you get very different results: soft fudge at the lower end, chewy caramel in the middle, glassy hard candy near the top. Add chocolate, nuts, fruit flavors or gelatin and the list keeps growing.

Most people have a candy they remember from childhood. It might be a lollipop from the bank teller, a roll of mints in a grandparent's coat pocket, or a paper bag of mixed pieces chosen one at a time from glass jars. Candy tends to carry those memories along with the sugar.

The day is usually marked in simple ways. Some people pick up an old favorite they have not tasted in years. Others try something new from a regional shop or an import aisle, where the flavors can run from salty licorice to tamarind. Home cooks sometimes take on a batch of fudge, brittle or toffee, which mostly asks for patience and a careful eye on the pot.

Candy making rewards attention. A candy thermometer helps, and so does reading the whole recipe before the sugar starts to boil, because the last stages move quickly. Brittle in particular goes from pale to perfect to burnt in about the time it takes to look for a spoon.

Plenty of candy is meant to be shared, broken into pieces or passed around in a bowl. A bag of assorted sweets on a break room table is usually empty by the afternoon.
