Carl Sagan Day honors the astronomer and science communicator who helped millions of people look up at the night sky with wonder.

Carl Sagan Day falls on Monday, November 9, 2026. That is 13 days away.
Carl Sagan was an American astronomer who spent much of his life explaining the universe to people who were not astronomers. He wrote popular books, worked on planetary science, and hosted the television series Cosmos, which walked viewers through stars, galaxies and the long story of life on Earth.
His gift was making enormous things feel close. He talked about the atoms in our bodies being made inside ancient stars, and about Earth as a tiny point of light seen from far out in space. People still quote his phrase "pale blue dot," taken from a photograph of Earth made by the Voyager 1 spacecraft as it headed out of the solar system.
He also cared about how we know things. Sagan argued for skepticism and careful thinking, the habit of asking for good evidence before believing a claim. That idea turns up in classrooms and science clubs as often as his descriptions of planets do.
Marking the day tends to be quiet and curious. Some people rewatch an episode of Cosmos or reread one of his books. Others step outside after dark and try to find a planet. Libraries, planetariums and astronomy clubs sometimes host talks or stargazing nights, and backyard telescopes come out when the weather cooperates.
You do not need equipment to start. On a clear night away from bright lights, the band of the Milky Way is visible to the naked eye, and it is made of more stars than anyone could count in a lifetime of looking.
