A little reason to celebrate

Cat Herders Day

Fun · Animal · December 15

A lighthearted day for anyone whose job means keeping restless people, plans or projects moving in roughly the same direction.

Cat Herders Day falls on Tuesday, December 15, 2026. That is 49 days away.

Herding cats is the classic picture of an impossible task. Cats do not travel in groups, do not follow a leader, and tend to walk the other way when called. The phrase stuck around because so much ordinary work feels exactly like that.

The day honors the people who do it anyway. Think of the teacher getting thirty children into coats before the bus leaves, the parent coordinating four schedules, the volunteer who runs the bake sale sign-up sheet, or the office manager who somehow gets everyone into one meeting at the same time. None of it looks dramatic. All of it is harder than it seems.

Most people mark it by noticing that person in their life and saying so. A thank-you note, a coffee, or simply showing up on time for once goes a long way with someone who spends their days chasing replies.

Actual cats are welcome too, of course. Real cats are independent by nature. Many of them prefer to explore on their own terms and come over when they decide it is time, which is the whole point of the saying. Anyone who lives with a cat knows the best approach is patience and a treat in your pocket.

The herders rarely get credit, because when they do the job well, everything just seems to happen on its own.

Ways to celebrate

• Thank the person who keeps your group, team or family organized.
• Reply promptly to that sign-up sheet or group message you have been ignoring.
• Offer to take one task off a busy coordinator's list.
• Spend quiet play time with a cat, letting it come to you.
