A little reason to celebrate

National Chocolate Day

Food ยท October 28

A day for chocolate in all its forms, from dark bars and milk chocolate to cocoa, truffles and a cup of something warm and rich.

National Chocolate Day

National Chocolate Day falls on Wednesday, October 28, 2026. That is tomorrow.

Chocolate starts as the seed of the cacao tree. The seeds grow inside large pods, and they are fermented, dried and roasted before they taste anything like the bar in your pantry. Ground up, they become a thick paste that can be pressed, sweetened and shaped into almost anything.

That range is what makes chocolate interesting. Dark chocolate keeps more of the cacao and leans bitter and deep. Milk chocolate adds milk for something softer and sweeter. White chocolate is made from cocoa butter, sugar and milk, without the dark cocoa solids at all, which is why it tastes so different from its relatives.

Most people mark the day the obvious way, by eating some. A square of a good bar, a brownie from a neighborhood bakery, a mug of hot cocoa on a cool afternoon. Others bake, melting chocolate into cookies or a simple sauce for ice cream. Tasting a few kinds side by side is a quiet pleasure, and it shows how much flavor changes from one bar to the next.

If you try a tasting, let each piece melt slowly on your tongue instead of chewing it right away. Notes of fruit, nuts or coffee tend to show up only when you give them a moment.

A bar left near a sunny window will turn soft and dull on top. Chocolate keeps best somewhere cool and dry, wrapped well.
