A day for chocolates, the small filled, molded and dipped pieces sold in boxes and shops, and for tasting a few with some attention.

National Chocolates Day falls on Sunday, November 29, 2026. That is 33 days away.
Chocolates, in the plural, are a different thing from a chocolate bar. They are the individual pieces: a shell of chocolate around a filling, a truffle rolled in cocoa powder, a nut or a cherry dipped and left to set.
The fillings do most of the talking. Ganache is chocolate blended with cream, so it melts softly. Caramel stretches. Fondant cream is sweet and smooth, and pralines bring ground nuts into it. A box of assorted chocolates is partly a guessing game, which is why some boxes come with a little map on the lid and some people press the bottom of a piece with a thumb to check what is inside.
The outside matters too. Good chocolate has a clean snap and a glossy surface, which comes from tempering, a careful process of heating and cooling that sets the cocoa butter in a stable form. Dark, milk and white chocolate each change how a filling tastes, so the same raspberry center can seem tart in one shell and mellow in another.
Most people mark the day simply. They open a box with someone, visit a local chocolate shop and pick a few pieces one by one, or try making truffles at home, which takes little more than chocolate, cream and cocoa powder. Eating slowly helps. Letting a piece sit on the tongue for a moment brings out more flavor than chewing it right away.
A white, dusty film on a chocolate is called bloom. It looks worrying, but it usually just means the piece got warm or damp at some point, and it is still fine to eat.
