A day about chopsticks, the paired sticks used to eat across much of East Asia, and the simple pleasure of learning to pick up food with them.

National Chopsticks Day falls on Saturday, February 6, 2027. That is 102 days away.
Two slim sticks, held in one hand, can lift a single grain of rice or a slippery noodle. Chopsticks are among the oldest eating tools still in daily use, and they are common at tables in China, Japan, Korea and Vietnam, along with many restaurants across the United States.
They come in more styles than most people expect. Japanese chopsticks are often shorter and taper to a fine point, which suits picking bones from fish. Chinese chopsticks tend to be longer with blunt ends. Korean chopsticks are frequently made of metal and are flatter. Wood and bamboo are the everyday materials, and plenty of homes keep a drawer of mismatched pairs from takeout bags.
The technique takes a little practice. The lower stick rests still against the base of the thumb and the ring finger, while the upper stick moves like a pencil, guided by the thumb, index and middle fingers. Most beginners grip too hard and too close to the tips. Holding them a bit higher and more loosely usually helps, and the first peanut that makes it all the way to your mouth feels like a small personal victory.
There is etiquette too. In several cultures it is considered impolite to stand chopsticks upright in a bowl of rice, because it resembles a funeral custom, and passing food directly from one pair of chopsticks to another is avoided for a similar reason. Resting them across the bowl or on a small holder is the usual habit.
