A little reason to celebrate
Fun · November 3
A day for noticing the worn-out phrases we all use, from "at the end of the day" to "think outside the box," and trying fresher words.

Cliché Day falls on Tuesday, November 3, 2026. That is 7 days away.
A cliché is a phrase that was once clever and got used so often it stopped being noticed. "Busy as a bee." "Avoid it like the plague." "Only time will tell." Each one started as someone's vivid idea, and now it mostly fills space.
They stick around for good reasons. A cliché is fast. Everyone knows what "back to square one" means, so nobody has to stop and think. That same speed is the problem, because a phrase that asks nothing of the listener also tends to leave no impression.
The usual way to mark the day is simply to listen. Once you start, they turn up everywhere: in meetings, sports interviews, weather reports and your own emails. Some people keep a tally. Others try a gentler game and rewrite one cliché into something plain or something new. "Cold as ice" might become "cold as the back of the freezer drawer," which is less elegant but at least sounds like a person said it.
The word itself comes from French printing, where it referred to a ready-made printing plate used for text or images that appeared again and again. A cliché, in other words, was always a shortcut, cast once and stamped out on repeat.
Not every familiar phrase deserves to be retired. "Thank you" is said constantly and still lands every time.
