A little reason to celebrate

Color TV Day

Hobby · History · June 25

Color TV Day is about the television sets that brought full color into living rooms and changed how people watched shows, sports and news.

Color TV Day

Color TV Day falls on Friday, June 25, 2027. That is 241 days away.

Color television is the technology that let a screen show the world in reds, greens and blues instead of shades of gray. It changed the look of almost everything people watched at home, from cartoons to weather maps.

Older color sets used a cathode ray tube. Inside, electron beams struck tiny dots of phosphor on the back of the glass, and those dots glowed in red, green or blue. Mixed together at a distance, they fooled the eye into seeing every other color. Modern flat screens still build pictures from red, green and blue, just with very different parts.

For many households, the switch from black and white was a memorable moment. Families remember the first time a familiar show suddenly had a green lawn or a red car in it. Some early color programs even reminded viewers at the start that they were broadcast in color, as if the picture might not make the point on its own.

People mark the day in easy ways. Some dig out old photos of the family set, the kind with wood paneling and a dial. Others watch a classic show that first aired in color, or look up how test patterns and color bars were used to tune a picture. Collectors of vintage electronics sometimes share restored sets, which can glow with a warmth newer screens do not quite copy.

If you stand close to an old tube television, you can still see the separate colored dots that make up the picture.
