A little reason to celebrate

National Coloring Day

Hobby · Family · September 14

Coloring as a shared activity: big paper on the floor, chalk on the sidewalk, and the freedom to color well past the lines.

National Coloring Day

National Coloring Day falls on Tuesday, September 14, 2027. That is 322 days away.

Coloring does not need a book. A roll of paper taped to the kitchen floor, a stretch of driveway, or the back of an old poster will do, and the bigger the surface, the more people can work on it at once.

That shared space changes the activity. One person fills in a sky while another adds a dog the size of a car. Someone colors the sun green. Nobody owns a corner for long, and the finished piece usually looks like a conversation more than a plan. Younger kids tend to scribble boldly at that scale, and adults often find themselves loosening up too, since there are no printed outlines to stay inside.

Coloring outside the lines is a real habit worth trying on purpose. Draw a few loose shapes, then let the color spill over them and see what new shapes appear in the overlaps. Wax crayons, washable markers and fat sidewalk chalk all behave differently on large surfaces. Chalk smudges into soft blends when rubbed with a finger, and a light spray of water from a bottle makes the colors look deeper for a while.

For sidewalk work, stick to your own driveway or a spot where chalk is welcome, and pick a dry day so the picture lasts. Rain will wash it away eventually, which some families treat as a reason to start fresh the next weekend.

A long paper mural can also be rolled up and saved. Unrolled a year later, it shows exactly who was tall enough to reach the top edge.
