Food ยท October 14
A food day for the sweet course that ends a meal, from pie and cake to pudding, cookies and a simple bowl of fruit.

National Dessert Day falls on Thursday, October 14, 2027. That is 352 days away.
Dessert is the sweet course that comes at the end of a meal. It can be as grand as a layered cake or as plain as a sliced apple, and both count.
The word covers a lot of ground. There are baked desserts like pies, cobblers, brownies and cookies. There are cold ones like ice cream, sorbet and icebox cake. There are soft, spoonable ones like pudding, custard and rice pudding, which many families make from recipes passed along on index cards. Plenty of American desserts started as ways to use up what was around, such as stale bread turned into bread pudding or ripe summer fruit baked under a biscuit crust.
Marking the day mostly means eating dessert on purpose. Some people bake something they have been meaning to try. Others visit a local bakery or diner and order the slice of pie they always skip because they are too full. It is also a reasonable moment to ask an older relative how they made the dessert you remember from childhood, and to write it down before the details fade.
A dessert does not have to follow dinner, of course. Nobody checks. Pie with morning coffee has a long and quiet following.
If you bake, custards and puddings are forgiving places to start, since they need only milk, eggs, sugar and a little patience at the stove.
