A little reason to celebrate

Dewey Decimal System Day

Hobby · History · December 10

A look at the Dewey Decimal System, the number scheme that tells you where a nonfiction book lives on a library shelf.

Dewey Decimal System Day

Dewey Decimal System Day falls on Thursday, December 10, 2026. That is 44 days away.

Walk into almost any public or school library in the United States and the nonfiction shelves follow a quiet logic. Each book carries a number on its spine, and that number places it among its neighbors. The Dewey Decimal System is the scheme behind those numbers.

It divides knowledge into ten main classes, each given a range of hundreds. Religion sits in the 200s, the sciences in the 500s, the arts in the 700s, history and geography in the 900s. Within each class the numbers narrow, and decimals let a topic get as specific as it needs to be. A book about one breed of dog ends up a few steps away from a book about dogs in general, which is the whole point. You can find one book and discover six more you did not know you wanted.

The call number usually adds a few letters after the digits, often from the author's last name, so books on the same subject also sort themselves alphabetically.

Part of the pleasure is browsing by number instead of by search box. Pick a range at random and see what lives there. The 640s hold cooking and home life. The 790s cover sports, games and recreation, which means a library can shelve chess, fishing and magic tricks within arm's reach of each other.

Not every library uses it. Many large academic libraries use the Library of Congress Classification instead, with letters leading the call numbers.
