A day about heterochromia, the trait of having two different colored eyes, or more than one color within a single eye, in people and animals.

National Different Colored Eyes Day falls on Monday, July 12, 2027. That is 258 days away.
Some people look at the world through one blue eye and one brown one. The trait is called heterochromia, and it can also show up as a ring or wedge of a second color inside a single iris.
Eye color comes mostly from melanin, the same pigment found in skin and hair. More melanin tends to mean a darker iris, and less means a lighter one. When the two eyes end up with different amounts, they look different. Many people are born this way, and for many of them it is simply part of how they look.
Animals carry the trait too, and often more visibly. Cats, especially white ones, are known for it, and so are dog breeds like Siberian Huskies and Australian Shepherds. A husky with one ice blue eye and one amber eye tends to get a second look on any sidewalk.
Marking the day is mostly a matter of paying attention. People share photos of their own mismatched eyes, or of a pet's, and swap stories about how strangers react. Others just look a little closer at the people around them, since the partial kind is easy to miss across a table. A thin band of gold around the pupil of a green eye counts, and plenty of people have it without ever having been told.
