A day for the double cheeseburger: two beef patties, two slices of melted cheese and a bun working hard to hold it all together.

National Double Cheeseburger Day falls on Wednesday, September 15, 2027. That is 323 days away.
A double cheeseburger is a cheeseburger with a second patty and, usually, a second slice of cheese. That is the whole idea, and it changes more than you might expect.
With two thinner patties instead of one thick one, there is more browned, crusty surface in every bite. The cheese gets tucked between the layers, where it melts into the meat rather than just sitting on top. The bun ends up doing a lot of structural work, which is why soft, squishy buns tend to win here over crusty rolls.
Most people meet the double cheeseburger at a diner, a drive-in or a backyard grill. At home, the smashed style is popular: a ball of ground beef pressed flat on a very hot pan or griddle so the edges turn lacy and crisp. Two of those cook in a couple of minutes, and a slice of American cheese laid on each patty right at the end melts almost instantly.
Toppings are where opinions start. Pickles, onions, ketchup and mustard are the classic diner lineup. Some cooks add shredded lettuce and a creamy sauce, others keep it to cheese and onion so the beef stays in charge. Stacking order matters too. Putting one patty under the other with the cheese between them helps the whole thing stay together instead of sliding apart.
A well built double cheeseburger should still fit in two hands, with a napkin close by.
