A little reason to celebrate

National Draw a Dinosaur Day

Fun · Hobby · January 30

A day for picking up a pencil and drawing a dinosaur, from a careful T. rex skeleton to a cheerful scribble of a long-necked plant eater.

National Draw a Dinosaur Day

National Draw a Dinosaur Day falls on Saturday, January 30, 2027. That is 95 days away.

Nearly everyone has drawn a dinosaur at some point. A long neck, a heavy tail, a row of plates along the back, and suddenly the page holds something that walked the earth long before people did.

Part of the appeal is freedom. Nobody has seen a living dinosaur, so every drawing is a mix of evidence and imagination. Scientists work from fossil bones, and artists who specialize in reconstructing prehistoric animals fill in muscle, skin and posture from there. Many dinosaurs are now known to have had feathers, which means a modern, accurate velociraptor looks more like a fierce, oversized bird than the scaly version in older picture books.

The day is marked with paper and whatever is nearby. Children fill sketchbooks with stegosaurus and triceratops. Adults doodle on sticky notes during calls. Some people trace the shapes from a museum skeleton, while others invent a species entirely, with extra horns and a color scheme no fossil could ever confirm or deny.

A simple trick for beginners is to start with ovals. One large oval for the body, a smaller one for the head, then tapering lines for the neck and tail. Legs go under the body like pillars for big plant eaters, or bent and springy for fast hunters. Shading the belly lighter than the back adds weight in a few strokes.

The triceratops, with its three horns and wide bony frill, remains a favorite because it is easy to recognize from nothing more than its outline.
