National Drive-In Movie Day

National Drive-In Movie Day falls on Sunday, June 6, 2027. That is 222 days away.

A drive-in theater is a parking lot with a very large screen at one end. People pull in, park facing the screen and watch a movie from their cars, usually after dark when the picture shows clearly.

The experience is part movie and part night out. Families bring blankets and pillows, some people sit in the open back of a hatchback or on folding chairs beside the car, and kids often end up asleep before the second feature. Many drive-ins show double features, so a single ticket can cover two films.

Sound has changed over time. Older theaters used small speakers that hung on the car window from a post. Many drive-ins today send the soundtrack over a local FM radio frequency, so the movie plays through your car stereo. A portable radio can save the car battery during a long show.

The snack bar is its own tradition, with popcorn, hot dogs and soda, and some theaters run old intermission reels between films. Getting there early helps, since the best spots in the center fill first and the light fades slowly on summer evenings.

If no drive-in is nearby, a backyard screening gets close to the feeling: a sheet on a fence, a borrowed projector, a few lawn chairs and the sound of crickets during the quiet scenes.
