A little reason to celebrate

Dyngus Day

Fun ยท 1 day after Easter

Dyngus Day, or Smigus-Dyngus, is a Polish tradition of water splashing, polka music and kielbasa, kept lively in many American communities.

Dyngus Day

Dyngus Day falls on Monday, March 29, 2027. That is 153 days away.

Smigus-Dyngus is a Polish folk custom built around water. People splash each other with buckets, squirt bottles or a cupped handful from the sink, and the person who gets wet is expected to take it in good spirit.

In the United States the tradition traveled with Polish immigrants and settled into neighborhoods where Polish American families made their homes. Today it often looks like a street party. There are polka bands, dancing, and plenty of kielbasa, pierogi and rye bread. Some places hold parades, and in many crowds the colors red and white show up on hats, scarves and shirts, matching the Polish flag.

An old part of the custom involves pussy willows. These are branches of willow with soft, gray catkins that appear early in spring, and in some traditions people tap each other lightly with them alongside the splashing. The catkins feel a little like fur, which is how the plant got its name.

At home the day can be much smaller. A family might share a plate of pierogi, put on some polka records, and keep the water fights to the backyard. Pierogi are dumplings of unleavened dough, folded around fillings such as potato and cheese, sauerkraut, or fruit, then boiled and often fried in butter with onions.

The one rule most people agree on is that the water should be clean and the splash should be friendly. A spray bottle aimed at a sibling's shoulder fits the spirit better than a hose at full pressure.
