Earmuffs get their moment: two padded rounds on a band that keep ears warm when a hat would flatten your hair or feel like too much.

National Earmuff Day falls on Saturday, March 13, 2027. That is 137 days away.
Earmuffs are a simple idea done well. Two soft pads, usually fleece or faux fur, sit over the ears and are held in place by a band that curves over the head or wraps behind the neck.
They solve a specific problem. Ears stick out, have little to keep them warm, and feel the cold quickly. A hat covers them too, but it also covers everything else, and some people would rather keep their hair, their ponytail or their headphones out of the way. Earmuffs leave the rest of the head alone.
The styles range widely. Some are puffy and bright, the kind a child picks out at a store. Others fold down small enough to fit in a coat pocket. There are behind-the-head bands that work under a hood, and there are earmuffs built for noise rather than cold, worn by people who run loud machines or sit near the runway at an airshow.
Marking the day can be as plain as wearing a pair outside and noticing how much warmer a walk feels. It can also mean digging through a closet for the pair that went missing last winter, which tends to be in the pocket of a different coat.
A good pair should press gently, not squeeze. If the band pinches after ten minutes, it will be left at home on the cold morning it was bought for.
