A day for fast food: burgers, fries, tacos and fried chicken served quickly at the counter or drive-through, and the habits Americans built around them.

National Fast Food Day falls on Monday, November 16, 2026. That is 20 days away.
Fast food is the meal that arrives before you have finished deciding on it. Burgers, fries, fried chicken, tacos, pizza by the slice and milkshakes, ordered at a counter or a drive-through window and handed over in a paper bag a few minutes later.
The idea is speed and sameness. A cheeseburger from a chain tastes much the same in one town as it does three states away, and plenty of travelers find that oddly comforting. The menus are built around food that can be cooked fast and eaten with your hands, which is why so much of it comes wrapped, boxed or in a cup with a lid.
Everyone has a personal order, and people defend it with surprising loyalty. Some swear by dipping fries in a shake. Others care mostly about the sauce packets and take a small handful home for later. Regional favorites matter too, from local burger stands to taco shops that never left their hometown.
People usually mark the day the obvious way, with a meal out. It is also a chance to try the independent place down the road that has been frying onion rings for years, or to make a fast food classic at home. A homemade smash burger takes about as long as the drive-through line, as long as the patty is cooked all the way through.
The fries, by most accounts, are best eaten in the car before you get home.
