A little reason to celebrate
Festival of Enormous Changes at the Last Minute
Fun ยท December 30
A lighthearted observance about sudden, sweeping changes made at the final moment, from rewritten plans to rearranged rooms and changed minds.
Festival of Enormous Changes at the Last Minute falls on Wednesday, December 30, 2026. That is 64 days away.
Some changes arrive slowly. Others show up an hour before the deadline and rearrange everything. This festival is about the second kind: the big switch made at the very end, when the plan was supposedly settled.
Most people know the feeling. The essay gets a new thesis the night before it is due. The dinner party menu changes after the groceries are bought. A haircut appointment turns into a whole new look once you are in the chair. These moments can be stressful, but they are also where a lot of good ideas come from, because the end of a project is when you finally see it clearly.
Marking the festival works best as a gentle experiment rather than a gamble. Pick something low stakes and change it boldly. Take a different route home. Swap the order of the furniture in one room. Cook the recipe you planned, then change one main ingredient. Rewrite the last paragraph of something you already finished and see which version you like better.
It also helps to look back. Many people can name one late decision that turned out well: a trip taken on short notice, a job applied for at the last call, a song added to a playlist just before the party started. Telling those stories to friends is an easy way to spend part of the day.
The one rule is to keep it kind. A sudden change to your own plans is fair game. A sudden change to someone else's plans goes better with a little warning.
