Fun · Seasonal · The third Friday in June
A day for the flip flop, the simple thong sandal of beaches, pools and backyards, marked on the third Friday in June as summer gets going.

National Flip Flop Day falls on Friday, June 18, 2027. That is 234 days away.
Flip flops are about as simple as footwear gets. A flat sole, a Y-shaped strap, and a post that sits between the big toe and the second toe. The name comes from the sound they make, that soft slap against the heel with every step.
The day falls on the third Friday in June, right around the point when closets get rearranged and the heavier shoes move to the back. It fits the timing. Flip flops belong to warm pavement, sandy parking lots, pool decks and the short walk to the mailbox.
Part of their appeal is how little they ask. No laces, no buckles, no socks. You step in and go. They dry quickly, rinse off easily and pack almost flat, which is why they turn up in beach bags and gym lockers alike. Some are plain rubber, some are foam, and some are leather or woven fabric with a little more structure.
Marking the day usually means wearing a pair, of course, and maybe retiring the old ones whose straps have stretched out or whose soles have worn thin at the heel. Some people paint their toenails for the occasion. Others just take a long walk somewhere the ground is warm.
The sound still does most of the talking. You can often tell someone is wearing flip flops before you see their feet.
