A day for the craft of floral design: arranging cut flowers, stems and greenery into bouquets, centerpieces and displays that look intentional.

National Floral Design Day falls on Sunday, February 28, 2027. That is 124 days away.
Floral design is the craft of arranging flowers so they look like they meant to end up together. A florist thinks about height, color, texture and empty space the way a painter thinks about a canvas, only the canvas drinks water and wilts by next week.
Most arrangements start with a few working parts. There is usually a focal flower that draws the eye, some filler blooms to soften the edges, and greenery that gives the whole thing shape. Designers trim stems at an angle so they take up water more easily, and they strip leaves that would otherwise sit below the waterline. Some styles are loose and garden-like. Others are tight and round, or tall and sparse, with a single branch doing most of the talking.
You do not need a shop or special tools to try it. A jar, a pair of scissors and a handful of stems from a yard, a grocery store bucket or a roadside patch of wildflowers (where picking is allowed) are enough. Odd numbers of the main flower tend to look more natural than even ones. Turning the vase as you work helps you see it from every side.
The best part is often the editing. Pulling one stem out can make an arrangement look calmer than adding three more ever would.
