A little reason to celebrate

National Frappe Day

Drink · October 7

A day for the frappe, a cold, frothy drink usually made by blending or shaking coffee with ice and milk until it turns light and foamy.

National Frappe Day

National Frappe Day falls on Thursday, October 7, 2027. That is 345 days away.

A frappe is a cold drink with a lot of air in it. Most often it means coffee shaken or blended with ice, milk and a little sugar until a pale foam sits on top. The name comes from the French word frappé, which describes something chilled.

The word travels, and it changes along the way. In Greece, a frappe is usually instant coffee shaken hard with water and ice, and it gets a thick, long-lasting foam. In parts of New England, a frappe is closer to what other Americans call a milkshake, made with ice cream and milk. Coffee shops across the country use the word for blended iced coffee drinks, often topped with whipped cream.

What ties them together is texture. A good frappe feels lighter than it looks, and the first sip is mostly froth. It is a slow drink, the kind you hold onto for a while, rattling the ice now and then.

Making one at home takes very little. A jar with a tight lid works as a shaker, and a blender handles the smoother versions. Instant coffee foams especially well, which is why the Greek style relies on it. Sweetness is up to you, and so is the milk, or whether there is any milk at all.

The foam fades as the ice melts, so a frappe is best drunk fairly soon after it is made.
