A light observance about fresh breath: what makes breath smell the way it does, and the simple everyday habits people use to keep it pleasant.

National Fresh Breath Day falls on Friday, August 6, 2027. That is 283 days away.
Breath is something we carry everywhere and rarely think about until a close conversation, a first date or a cup of strong coffee brings it to mind. This day gives that quiet, ordinary concern a moment of attention.
Most everyday breath odor starts in the mouth. Bacteria on the tongue and between the teeth break down bits of food and give off smelly compounds. Garlic and onions are a different case, because some of their compounds travel through the body and leave by way of the lungs. That is why a mint can cover garlic for a while but rarely makes it disappear.
The usual habits are familiar ones: brushing, flossing, and giving the tongue a gentle brush or scrape. Drinking water helps keep the mouth from drying out, and saliva does much of the cleaning on its own. Chewing sugar free gum keeps saliva flowing too.
People have chased pleasant breath for a very long time, with chewing sticks, herbs and spices. Fresh mint leaves, parsley, fennel seeds and cloves still turn up after meals in many kitchens and restaurants. A small bowl of fennel seeds by the door, sweet and faintly like licorice, does the job and looks rather nice doing it.
