A little reason to celebrate
Games Day
Hobby · Fun · December 20
A day for playing games of every kind, from board games and card games to backyard classics and puzzles, with friends, family or on your own.
Games Day falls on Sunday, December 20, 2026. That is 54 days away.
A deck of cards on the kitchen table can turn an ordinary evening into something people remember. Games Day is about that pull: playing for the plain pleasure of it, with rules, turns and a little friendly suspense.
The word covers a lot of ground. Board games, card games, dice games, word games, party games and outdoor games like tag or hopscotch all count. Some take five minutes and some take an entire afternoon, plus a snack break and a heated discussion about what the rules actually say.
Most games share a few basic parts. There is a goal, a set of limits on how you can reach it, and some mix of skill and luck. Change the balance and the feel changes too. Chess leaves nothing to chance, while a roll of the dice can humble the best planner at the table.
Playing together is the usual way to mark the day. Families dig out the box from the closet with the slightly bent corners. Friends teach each other a game one of them grew up with. Libraries and community centers sometimes keep games on hand for anyone to borrow or play on site.
If you are short on supplies, many classics need almost nothing. A pencil and paper are enough for tic tac toe or dots and boxes, and a single deck of cards holds dozens of games. Charades needs no equipment at all, only someone willing to act out a movie title without speaking.
Ways to celebrate
- Host a game night with whatever games you already own.
- Teach someone a card game you learned as a kid.
- Try a pencil and paper game like dots and boxes.
- Borrow a board game from your local library.
- Play a round of charades after dinner.
