National Girl Scout Day falls on Friday, March 12, 2027. That is 136 days away.
Girl Scouts is a youth organization for girls in the United States, built around small troops that meet regularly with adult volunteer leaders. Members learn practical skills, work on projects in their communities and spend time outdoors. National Girl Scout Day puts the spotlight on that work and the people who do it.
The structure is easy to recognize. Girls are grouped by age into levels, and they earn badges by completing activities on a theme, from first aid to coding to camping. The badges go on a sash or vest, which slowly fills up and becomes a kind of record of everything a scout has tried. Many former scouts can still tell you which badge gave them the most trouble.
Then there are the cookies. Selling cookies is one of the best known Girl Scout activities, and it doubles as a lesson in setting goals, handling money and talking to strangers politely. A folding table outside a grocery store has taught plenty of people how to make change.
The day is often marked by troops wearing their uniforms to school or meetings, doing a service project, or holding ceremonies where girls move up a level. Former scouts tend to mark it too, by digging out an old sash or telling a camp story that has grown a little with each retelling.
The Girl Scout Promise and Law are recited at meetings, and many adults who left scouting long ago can still say the opening words without thinking.
