A little reason to celebrate

National Golden Retriever Day

Animal ยท February 3

A day for golden retrievers, the friendly, feathery gundogs known for soft mouths, love of water and a tail that rarely stops moving.

National Golden Retriever Day

National Golden Retriever Day falls on Wednesday, February 3, 2027. That is 99 days away.

Golden retrievers are medium to large dogs with dense, water-repellent coats in shades from pale cream to deep gold. They were bred in Scotland as gundogs, made to fetch shot birds from fields and water and bring them back undamaged.

That job shaped them. A good retriever carries things gently, a trait people call a soft mouth, and many goldens still offer a shoe, a sock or a leaf at the door as a greeting. They tend to love water, and a pond can undo a fresh bath in seconds.

They are known for a patient, eager temperament, which is why so many work as guide dogs, therapy dogs and search dogs. They also stay puppyish for a long time, and an adult golden can greet a returning family as if they had been gone for a year rather than ten minutes.

The day is mostly marked at home and in the park. Owners take an extra long walk, play fetch until someone gives up (usually the human), and share photos of their dogs looking serious for about two seconds. People without a golden often spend it admiring other people's.

That coat sheds, steadily, through the year and heavily in seasonal bursts. A weekly brushing keeps the tumbleweeds of gold fur in the hallway to a manageable size.
