A little reason to celebrate

Golfer's Day

Hobby ยท April 10

A day about the people who play golf: their etiquette, their foursomes, their handicaps and the small rituals they carry from course to course.

Golfer's Day

Golfer's Day falls on Saturday, April 10, 2027. That is 165 days away.

Golfers are a particular kind of people. They will stand perfectly still while someone else swings, fix a mark they did not make, and tell you their score honestly even when nobody was watching. This page is about them more than the game.

Much of golf runs on courtesy. Players stay quiet during a shot, keep their shadows off another person's line on the green, and repair divots and ball marks so the course stays good for whoever comes next. Calling out "fore" warns anyone who might be in the path of a stray ball. None of it is enforced by a referee in a casual round. Golfers mostly police themselves.

The handicap is another piece of that culture. It is a number that estimates a player's ability, and it lets golfers of very different skill compete fairly in the same group. A foursome (four players sharing a round) often mixes friends, strangers paired up at the first tee, and a parent with a grown child. Conversations happen between shots that might not happen anywhere else.

Then there are the rituals. Some golfers always use a ball with a certain number, mark it with a dot of ink, or carry a lucky coin as a ball marker. Plenty practice putting at home, aiming at a cup or a chair leg across the living room carpet, which is cheap, quiet and surprisingly humbling.

If you know a golfer, ask about the best shot they ever hit. They will remember the hole, the club and probably the weather.
