National Granola Bar Day falls on Thursday, January 21, 2027. That is 86 days away.
A granola bar is granola that has agreed to hold still. Rolled oats, nuts, seeds and dried fruit are bound together with something sticky, usually honey, syrup or nut butter, then pressed flat and cut into bars.
They come in two broad families. Chewy bars stay soft and bend a little before they break. Crunchy bars are baked until crisp and tend to shed crumbs onto whatever you are wearing. Within both families the add-ins wander widely: chocolate chips, coconut, peanut butter, cranberries, a drizzle of yogurt coating on the bottom.
Part of the appeal is how little the bar asks of you. It needs no plate, no fridge and no fork. That makes it a regular on hiking trails and road trips, in desk drawers and in the outer pocket of a school bag, where one sometimes waits for weeks.
Making them at home is easier than it looks. Toast the oats first for a deeper flavor, warm the binder so it coats everything evenly, and press the mixture firmly into the pan before it cools. Letting the slab set fully before cutting gives you clean bars instead of a tray of loose granola, though loose granola is still breakfast.
The most personal choice is the add-in. Some people swear by a pinch of salt, others by a handful of something tart to cut the sweetness.
