A little reason to celebrate

Guinea Pig Appreciation Day

Animal ยท July 16

A day for appreciating guinea pigs, the chatty, gentle rodents that live in many American homes and classrooms as small companion pets.

Guinea Pig Appreciation Day

Guinea Pig Appreciation Day falls on Friday, July 16, 2027. That is 262 days away.

Guinea pigs are small, sturdy rodents with no tail to speak of and a lot to say. They squeak, chirp and make a high whistle when they hear the refrigerator door, which they quickly learn to associate with vegetables.

Despite the name, they are not pigs and have nothing to do with Guinea. They come from the Andes in South America, where they were domesticated long ago. Today they are kept as pets around the world, prized for being calm enough to hold and social enough to notice when you walk into the room.

They are herbivores. Most of their diet is hay, which keeps their teeth in check, since those teeth never stop growing. Fresh vegetables fill in the rest, and like people, guinea pigs cannot make their own vitamin C, so they need it from their food.

They are happiest with company of their own kind. A pair will chatter back and forth, nap in the same hideout and occasionally leap straight up in the air for no clear reason. Owners call this popcorning, and it usually means a guinea pig is feeling good.

Appreciating them mostly looks like paying attention: a clean cage, a fresh pile of hay, some floor time in a safe space. A guinea pig that has been well looked after will often greet its person with a wheek, which is about as clear a thank you as a rodent can manage.
