National Handbag Day falls on Sunday, October 10, 2027. That is 348 days away.
A handbag is a bag carried by hand or on the shoulder to hold the things a person needs during the day. Keys, a wallet, a phone, lip balm, a pen that may or may not work. The shapes vary widely, from tiny clutches to roomy totes that could pass for luggage.
Most handbags are built around a few simple parts: a body, a closure such as a zipper, clasp or flap, and a handle or strap. Leather is a classic material, but canvas, nylon, straw and fabric are common too. Inside, many have small pockets meant to keep things sorted, which works right up until it doesn't.
People tend to have strong feelings about their bags. Some carry the same one for years until the corners wear soft. Others match a bag to the outfit or the errand. A crossbody keeps hands free on a busy street, while a structured bag holds its shape on a desk or a lap.
A quiet way to mark the day is to empty your bag completely and look at what has collected at the bottom. Receipts, coins and a stray snack wrapper are typical finds. Wiping out the lining and putting back only what you use makes the bag lighter on the shoulder.
Older bags often carry stories, too. A bag passed down from a parent or grandparent may have a worn handle shaped by someone else's grip.
