A little reason to celebrate

National Help a Horse Day

Animal ยท April 26

A day about horses and the people who care for them, from rescue barns to riding stables, and simple ways to lend a hand.

National Help a Horse Day

National Help a Horse Day falls on Monday, April 26, 2027. That is 181 days away.

Horses need a lot of looking after. They eat for much of the day, need their hooves trimmed regularly, and do best with company, room to move and someone paying attention. This day is a nudge to think about that work and the animals on the receiving end of it.

Many horses live long lives, often well past the years when they can be ridden or worked. Older horses still need feed, shelter, farrier visits and a vet now and then. Rescue groups and retirement farms take in horses whose owners can no longer keep them, and they tend to run on volunteers and small donations.

Helping does not require owning a horse or knowing how to ride. Rescues often need people to muck stalls, mend fences, carry hay, wash buckets or answer emails. Some hold open days where visitors can meet the herd and learn how a barn runs. A horse will usually notice a newcomer before the newcomer has worked out which end of the brush to hold.

If you do visit, follow the staff's lead. Horses are prey animals, so they can startle at sudden movement or noise, and it is safer to approach from the side where they can see you. Ask before offering any treat, since many horses are on careful diets.

A quiet barn in the late afternoon, with horses pulling at hay nets and swishing their tails, is a good place to see why people give so much time to them.
