A little reason to celebrate
International Cat Day
Animal ยท August 8
International Cat Day is about domestic cats: how they live with us, what they need, and the quiet ways people show them some extra attention.
International Cat Day falls on Sunday, August 8, 2027. That is 285 days away.
Cats share millions of homes, and International Cat Day gives them a turn at the center of attention. It is marked in the United States too, by cat owners, shelters and anyone who has been stared at by a cat from across a room.
Domestic cats are small hunters at heart. They have sharp hearing, whiskers that help them judge tight spaces, and retractable claws they keep in shape by scratching. Many sleep a large part of the day and become more active around dawn and dusk, which explains a certain kind of early morning visit.
People usually mark the day at home. That might mean a new cardboard box, a long play session with a wand toy, or simply letting the cat keep the warm spot on the couch. Others turn their attention to cats without homes, checking in with a local shelter about donations of food, blankets or time.
Cats tend to show trust in small ways. A slow blink, a raised tail or a head bump against a hand are all signs of a relaxed cat. Returning a slow blink is a gentle way to answer.
And if your cat ignores the whole occasion and sleeps through it, that is very much in character.
Ways to celebrate
- Try a slow blink at your cat and see if it blinks back.
- Play with a wand toy for ten minutes before dinner.
- Ask a local shelter what supplies it needs and donate one item.
- Set up a cardboard box or a sunny window perch.
- Share a photo of your cat napping.
