International Chef Day honors the people who cook for a living, from restaurant kitchens to school cafeterias, and the craft behind every plate.

International Chef Day falls on Wednesday, October 20, 2027. That is 358 days away.
A chef is the person who runs a kitchen. The word comes from the French for "chief," and the job is part cook, part planner and part calm voice when six orders land at once. International Chef Day is about them, and it is marked in the United States as well as elsewhere.
Most diners only ever see the result: a plate set down, still warm. Behind it are hours of prep, sharp knives, hot pans and a team that often works while everyone else is eating. Many professional kitchens follow a brigade system, where each station has a role, such as sauces, grilling or pastry. Chefs also cook in hospitals, hotels, schools and food trucks, places where nobody posts photos of lunch but the work is just as real.
People mark the day in plain ways. Some thank the cook at a favorite diner by name. Others try a recipe from a chef they admire, or teach a child how to hold a knife safely and chop an onion. Home cooks sometimes treat it as a chance to make one dish properly instead of quickly, which mostly means tasting as you go and adding salt in stages.
If you eat out, a short note on the receipt can travel back to the kitchen. Line cooks rarely hear what happened after the plate left the pass.
