A little reason to celebrate

International Chess Day

Hobby ยท July 20

A day for chess, the two-player strategy game of kings, queens and pawns, marked in the United States and around the world.

International Chess Day

International Chess Day falls on Tuesday, July 20, 2027. That is 266 days away.

Sixty-four squares, thirty-two pieces and two people trying very hard not to blink. Chess is a strategy game for two players, each commanding an army of pawns, knights, bishops, rooks, a queen and a king. The goal is checkmate: trapping the other side's king so it has no safe move left.

The day is marked in the United States as well as in many other countries, and it looks much the same everywhere. Boards come out in parks, libraries and kitchens. Clubs hold casual games, and people who learned the moves as kids dig out the old set to see if they still remember how the knight jumps.

Part of the game's pull is that the rules fit on one page while the possibilities seem endless. Each piece moves in its own way. Bishops stay on one color for the whole game, rooks slide in straight lines, and pawns shuffle forward one square at a time until, if they reach the far side, they can be promoted into a stronger piece. A beginner can play a full game within an hour of learning. A lifetime of study still leaves room for surprises.

Chess also travels well. It can be played across a table, by mail, on a phone, or in quick timed games where each player gets only a few minutes on the clock. Some players prefer to solve puzzles alone, working out the one move that wins.

If you are teaching someone new, start with the pawns and the king before adding the rest. The castle-shaped piece is the rook, and it is usually the last one new players stop calling a castle.
