A little reason to celebrate
International Podcast Day
Hobby ยท September 30
A day for podcasts, the recorded shows people stream or download and listen to on commutes, walks and long chores, marked across the US too.
International Podcast Day falls on Thursday, September 30, 2027. That is 338 days away.
A podcast is a recorded audio show released in episodes, usually free, that you can stream or download and play whenever you like. Some are two friends talking. Others are carefully edited documentaries, radio dramas, interviews or lessons on a single narrow subject. International Podcast Day is observed in many places, and listeners in the United States mark it too.
Much of the appeal is how portable the format is. People listen while driving, folding laundry, walking the dog or waiting for a kettle. A good host starts to feel like a familiar voice in the room. That may be why so many listeners stay with one show for years and know the theme music by heart.
The range is huge. There are shows about true crime, gardening, old movies, local history, knitting, sports trivia and the inner workings of very specific industries. If a topic has a dozen devoted fans, someone has probably made a show about it.
Marking the day can be simple. Try a show outside your usual habits, or go back to the first episode of an old favorite and hear how it began. Many independent podcasts are made by one or two people with a microphone and a lot of patience, so a kind review or a recommendation to a friend carries real weight.
Some people use the day to start recording their own show, with a phone and a quiet closet full of coats, which works better than you might expect.
Ways to celebrate
- Try a podcast on a subject you know nothing about.
- Share a favorite episode with a friend who would like it.
- Leave a kind review for an independent show you enjoy.
- Listen to the first episode of a long-running favorite.
- Record a short test episode with your phone.
