A look at kissing in its many everyday forms, from a cheek kiss hello to a kiss blown from a train platform, and ways to mark the day kindly.

National Kissing Day falls on Tuesday, June 22, 2027. That is 238 days away.
Lips, mostly. That is the short answer to what a kiss is made of, though the longer answer includes timing, nerve and a fair amount of guessing about which way to tilt your head. National Kissing Day gives the gesture a little attention.
Kisses do different jobs depending on where they land. A kiss on the cheek can mean hello or goodbye. A kiss on the forehead tends to say I am looking out for you. A kiss on the hand is mostly found in old films now. A kiss blown across a room travels without touching anyone at all, which makes it the most polite of the bunch.
Customs vary a lot. In some families and places, a kiss on each cheek is an ordinary greeting between friends. Elsewhere a handshake or a wave does that work, and a cheek kiss would feel surprising. Reading the room matters more than any rule.
Most people mark the day quietly. Couples might make a point of a real kiss instead of the distracted one at the door. Others send a kiss emoji to a far away grandparent or blow one to a child at school drop off. Chocolate kisses wrapped in foil count too, and they are easy to share at work.
The one firm rule is consent. A kiss only means something good when both people want it, and asking first is never awkward for long.
